6th Grade visits Barrio de los Lipanes Cemetery
People of La Junta for Preservation along with Big Bend Conservation Alliance engage 6th grade students within PISD.
Sixth graders who helped put together invitations were some of the first to visit Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes. The group took a field trip to the site ahead of the March 23 opening ceremony.
Two buses full of curious students pulled up to the cemetery shortly after lunchtime. Teachers walked students through the cemetery in groups, allowing them enough time to read the interpretive signs. Many students appreciated seeing the cemetery in person after hearing about it in the classroom and helping with the invitations.
We hope to see everyone at the Blessing Ceremony this weekend -- Saturday, March 23 at 10AM.
Thank you to first-year teacher Carissa Madrid for helping organize all the activities and to teachers Luisa Olivares and Edgar Tibayan; school administrators Taro Gutierrez, Ivrin Olivas, and superintendent Carmen Rubner; and Elvira Hermosillo for helping organize these events.
Christina Hernandez and Dr. Nakaya Flotte—from Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and People of La Junta for Preservation—helped envision this programming.
